Food Shoots Always Have A Story

Today’s Food Photography for Harvey’s a few years back.
Seems like every food shoot has a story…This one started with the client wanting a shot of rotisserie chicken in their commercial rotisserie cooker, which was just ugly. So I got the idea of shooting the rack of chicken w/flames behind a window that was in the entry to restaurant and but the plated food in front. Great idea, huh – creative, visual, etc. We hung the rack of chicken off some stands, put a large metal pan underneath it and used rubber cement for the flames which we poured on the pan. All went well until the chicken fat started dripping on the flames and thing started to get out of control, about the time when the CEO or Harvey’s walked by and got on the nearby elevator. We got the fire out with some wet towels and
got the shot, but Bob Contreras, our art director got a rather nervous call about what we were doing down there! Never a dull food shoot!Mexican Rotisserie Chicken (Vance Fox/©VanceFox.com)

Trip to the Bay Area

A short trip to the Bay Area for a custom home in Lafayette, Ca. An interesting Green LEED residence with a unique solar fireplace that (as I understand it) heats up at the top and draws hot air up the chimney allowing cool air to come in and cool the house in the summer. Designed by Faulkner Architects.

What we’ve been doing for the last few years.

Here’s the last shot on a two year plus project – shooting the incredible guns for the Yellowstone Press books “Magnificent Colts” Volumes 1 and 2, by authors Robert M. Lee and R.L. Wilson. The book will be released soon with 550 pages. The link below takes you to Yellowstone’s page on the book which shows the covers and some of the pages we’ve done:   http://www.yellowstonepress.com/art-of-the-gun-magnificent-colts/

Every photograph was shot on location with studio lighting. We started with film but soon determined that digital capture through a tethered computer worked much better for showing the detail required by the client as well as the color correction needed to match the look of each piece.

Back to Real Estate

A beautiful property in Montreux, Reno, Nv  listed by Dickson Realty: Rebecca Dickson and Jan Houston.

After numerous weather delays – a wonderful result. Great clients and an appreciative, involved owner made this shoot go smooth as silk.

Healthcare Design in Wenatchee, Washington.

Wenatchee, Washington was the site for our shoot with HDR Architects out of their Seattle office. We spent about two days shooting the new Central Washington Hospital – mostly interiors as the exterior was not quite complete. We’ll be going back once the south elevation and lobby are finished. We were able to get some shots of the new exterior though HDR was not expecting any.

The shoot did present some issues to overcome:  we needed to show some of the artwork but show architecture too – I think we solved that with shot 001, they also needed to include views in the rooms – see 002 among others. Also we needed a shot of the physical therapy room, but it was a bit cluttered and didn’t show much in the way of architectural interest –  our solution was shoot it from the outside at twilight.

All in all a great shoot. Wenatchee is a small town on the Columbia River in central Washington. Lots of apple orchards and beautiful landscapes. I do look forward to going back in the fall.

New Hyatt Lone Eagle Grill

Lone Eagle Grill shoot with different point of view and digital equipment.  The higher point of view makes it look larger (the carpet adds to this effect) and the use of digital capture lets us use some light paining techniques. The hardest part was waiting until all the customers had left for the evening. Too bad I don’t drink on assignments!

The folks at the Hyatt were very accommodating as was the staff at Smith and Jones Marketing. Thanks for a great shoot.

Upcoming Hyatt Lake Tahoe Shoot

Gearing up for Hyatt Lake Tahoe shoot on Tuesday. Should be fun – we’re reshooting the Lone Eagle Grill that’s been redone.
Here’s the shot we did in 1997 – shot on 4×5 film.
This time we’ll be shooting a Nikon D3x producing a 75mb file. What a difference 14 years can make. Stand by for the updated photo.
